About „Sztuka i Kultura”

„Sztuka i Kultura” (“Arts and Culture”) is a scientific yearbook of the Department of History of Art and Culture (Katedra Historii Sztuki i Kultury), an independent unit at the Faculty of History (Wydział Nauk Historycznych) of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (NCU).

The journal has been published since 2013 in both printed and digital form, the latter of which is available at Academic Journals Platform (Akademicka Platforma Czasopism). The Editor-in-Chief is Prof. Ryszard Mączyński, PhD, and the publisher is NCU Scientific Publishing House (Wydawnictwo Naukowe UMK). The high substantive level of the publication is under the supervision of Rada Redakcyjna (Editorial Board), composed of individual Department employees, Rada Konsultacyjna (Advisory Board), in which representatives of various European centres are seated, as well as critics.

The title – „Sztuka i Kultura” – stems from its Torun tradition. It was once adopted for a publishing series meant to publish materials from international conferences organized by the Department of History of Art and Culture at NCU in the years 1999–2004, initiated and designed by Prof. Zygmunt Waźbiński, PhD. Those annual conventions were supposed to favour scientific bonds between Torun and other academic environments in Poland and abroad, and significantly contribute to the development of research in modern art, Italian in particular.

At present, in its altered form, the new „Sztuka i Kultura” is a scholarly journal, which through personal interests of individual authors, aims at reflecting the true richness of the diversity of directions and tendencies in today's history of art. Therefore, it will not be limited to a single subject-matter or one historical period in particular. Instead, it will present on a yearly basis the effects of the presently conducted as well as completed research in their staggering diversity.

The subsequent volumes of „Sztuka i Kultura” contain articles, whose authors are predominantly the academics, PhD students and regular students of Department of History of Art and Culture NCU. It was an obvious intention to enable the people making up the Department to widely present the effects of their research. Yet, the pages of the magazine remain wide open for all art and culture historians form Poland and abroad, the only criterion qualifying the articles for print being their scientific significance. Welcome!

A Thank You must be extended to His Magnificence Rector Magnificus of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Prof. Andrzej Tretyn PhD, as well as to the Deans of the Faculty of History: Prof. Jacek Gzella PhD and Prof. Stanisław Roszak PhD – for their decisions favourable to the Department of History of Art and Culture, which supported and enabled the publishing of „Sztuka i Kultura” in its annual formula.
